The Six Sigma Black Belt certification requires completion of a 10-day in-person course, a passing score on the Black Belt exam, and successful completion of a real-world Six Sigma project. The Black Belt curriculum is accredited by the Council for Six Sigma Certification, and follows the American Society for Quality (ASQ) Body of Knowledge.
The in-person course is presented in two 5-day sessions, separated by a one month break. The course is fast paced and rigorous, and students should have a firm grasp of creating graphs and using formulas in Excel, as well as facility in solving algebraic formulas. A Green Belt from an approved program is also required. Students should bring a laptop computer loaded with Excel and a trial copy of Minitab statistical software.
The Black Belt course builds from the knowledge students gained in their Green Belt studies. The course material is presented using lecture and reinforced using individual and group exercises based on a case study. An course spreadsheet containing document templates, statistical calculators, data sets and reference tables is also used extensively. Starting in Day 4, Minitab statistical software is introduced and used to perform basic statistical analysis and hypothesis testing.
During the month-long break, students interact with an online course space to complete additional homework assignments and take practice quizzes on the first sessions’ topics. Students also continue to work on planning their Six Sigma projects and crafting their problem and goal statements.
The second 5-day session continues with advanced statistical analysis using Minitab. On the final class day of the second session, students sit for a 4-hour, open book exam.
After passing the exam, students will complete a Six Sigma project. Students will be mentored throughout their projects, and will submit tollgate reports to the instructor for each of the DMAIC phases. Students must complete their projects within 12 months to earn their Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification. (A copy of Minitab software will be provided to students so they can perform data analysis during the project period.)
